A Discussion with Dr. Roark about Surgical Options Following Massive Weight Loss or Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery
With the growing popularity of bariatric surgery, a body lift procedure is very effective for the body contouring process arising after massive weight loss. In years past, most abdominoplasty patients were postpartum women who had significant relaxation of their abdominal muscles after pregnancies. However, the principles of surgery apply equally to massive weight loss patients who have reduced their weight perhaps 125-200 pounds.
As described by Dr. Ted Lockwood, the high lateral tension abdominoplasty uses the same bikini line incision as a full abdominoplasty, but shifts the tension from the central third of the incision (the classic form of abdominoplasty) to the lateral third of the incision.
Shifting the maximum tension to the outer third provides several advantages. First, the tissue is more accurately put back from where it fell. Second, wide undermining of the tissue is not necessary, thus reducing the possibility of tissue loss due to a cut in the blood supply which makes the procedure not only better aesthetically, but also safer.
Additionally, because the blood supply is not divided, significant liposuction can be performed around the trunk and upper thighs. With tension being shifted to the outer thirds rather than the central third, rejuvenation of tissues adjacent to the abdomen is made possible. Hence, the high lateral tension technique provides rejuvenation of tissues in the area around the upper tight, the groin, the waist and the abdomen so they can look balanced and toned.
These lower body lift procedures take about the same amount of time as a classic abdominoplasty. However, it may take longer because more liposculpting is done, but giving the patient a much better aesthetic result.
